Our story
In fall 2006, we drove to the island of Korppoo (Korpo) to go have a look at a restaurant that was for sale. When we saw it, we were sold – what a lovely building!
This historically significant building our restaurant is located in is called Stabhshuset – it was built in 1935. Since 1970, it has always had a restaurant in its premises which has had multiple names over the years; Forellen, Klykan, Mäk Hjalmar and now, our beloved Hjalmar’s. We as well wanted the name to respect the legacy of Jalmari Mäkelä, who built it.
We created Hjalmar’s to be a family restaurant that’s easy to come to, even with a bigger group of people. You can also come to have some “me time”, maybe for lunch or to have a quiet evening around good food and carefully picked drinks, even during wintertime.
It’s our honor to serve delicious, mostly near produced food to our local customers as well as the ones who have a longer travel. We top it off with our friendly service!
In 2013, we expanded our business by building lovely hotel rooms so that the island would be able to accommodate more of its visitors.
In addition to this, we have a professional and friendly staff with chefs and waiters. During summertime when it gets busier, we’re able to recruit more staff which gives the local youngsters the chance to work in a restaurant. All of our own children have also worked in our restaurant at some point in their teenage years.
You can also shop when you’re at Hjalmar’s – Our Moroccan rug store has the same opening times as our restaurant. We sell responsibly produced and bought rugs & other interior decoration.

About us
Hjalmars is a cosy restaurant & pub in the idyllic archipelago of Turku (Åbo), on an island called Korppoo (Korpo). We serve good food in a friendly atmosphere. Our menu consists of fish, stakes and salads made of locally produced goods and on top of that we make pizzas and hamburgers to complete our menu. Special dietary requirements are taken into account.
Lunch is served during weekdays. During the weekends we always offer delicious recommendation meals in addition to the à la carte list. Our restaurant is known for its broad selection of wines, beers and ciders.
